9-12 Afterschool

Mon-Fri | 3:30-4:30pm and/or 4:30-5:30pm

General Afterschool provides a safe and active place for students to engage in constructive activities and socialize with peers. Independence and friendship are key to 9-12 “Hangout,” where students have opportunities to pursue art projects, group games and other activities according to their interests. Students have the option for outdoor play when weather and the schedule allows. A light, healthy snack is served.

Advanced Pottery

Learn the ins and outs of ceramics, while creating fun and functional pieces. Students in this class will explore hand building ceramics with textured slabs, while creating plates bowls, mugs, wall art and so much more!

Girls Rock

Mon | 3:30-4:30pm

Instructor: NNM Spanish Teacher Josefina Asconopé

Students who identify as female are invited to participate in an affinity group focused on building strong friendships and feeling good in your own skin! We will spend our time exploring a number of interests and activities including art projects, studying strong women in history, serving the local and school community, and much more!

Mishigami School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Mishigami School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: a Chicago-inspired Hogwarts. Students who love the Harry Potter series and wish they could study magic themselves will love this Chicago-based school of magic. We will be studying divination, charms, wandlore and more!

Artists’ Workshop

Cost: $135 (Mon) or $180 (Weds)

Artists' Workshop is a popular staple of Afterschool activities and a lively environment for all manner of artistic expressions. Students use paint, fabric, feathers, wood and more to explore their inspired endeavors. Sue provides guidance and skill development, and the young artists lead the way.

Swim Team 9-14

Mon, Wed and Thurs | 4:30-5:30pm (single registration includes all three days)

Coach: NNM Aquatics Coordinator Kim Kuehl

Cost: $431

Swim Team is a competitive team sport emphasizing stroke development, endurance training and sport etiquette. Students participate in practices and meets against other teams. For safety reasons, participants must be able to swim a length of the pool unassisted on both their front and back, tread water for 15 seconds and demonstrate postural control through rolling and floating. As per league rules, participants may not be a member of another swim team. Swim Team season continues through Session 2. Participation requires approval of Kim Kuehl, Aquatics Coordinator. Contact kkuehl@nnms.org with questions regarding your child’s swim level. Parental assistance during competition is greatly appreciated, though not required.

Chess

Chess is a great way for students to learn patience, concentration, and problem solving while having fun playing the world's greatest game. Students will learn rules, tactics and strategy as well as sportsmanship and the art of friendly competition.Theo brings many years of experience teaching chess at NNM and to Chicagoland students of all ages. Beginners and returning chess players are welcome.

Homework Group

Kathy joins students in the library for an opportunity to pursue homework assignments and continued learning. With more than thirty-two years of experience, Kathy is a wonderful resource for participants.

Alternative Art Adventures

Tues | 3:30-4:30pm

Instructor: NNM Assistant Laura Troyer-Joy

Cost: $180

Trade in your paint brush for a potato masher, feathers or a tennis ball as we explore creativity in new and exciting ways. We will sculpt with recycled materials, paint with chemical reactions and much more. The possibilities are endless when you create outside of the box!

Instructional Swim 1 & 2

(both sessions run concurrently, with instructors targeting the skill level of each participant)

Instructor: NNM Aquatics Coordinator Kim Kuehl

Instructional Swim 1 is an introductory swim course emphasizing personal water safety and aquatic fundamentals. Skills covered include water entry/exit, bubbles, bobbing, opening eyes underwater, retrieving submerged objects, buoyancy on front (glide, recovery), buoyancy on back (float, glide, recovery), changing direction/position, treading, swimming on front/back (alternating and simultaneous arm/leg actions) and swimming with life jackets.

Instructional Swim 2 participants demonstrate mastery of aquatic fundamentals and continue to build new skills, with stronger emphasis on distance and time. Skills covered include entering by stepping or jumping from side, bobbing, submersion and retrieval of objects underwater, front float (tuck, jellyfish), back float, front/back glides, changing direction of travel while swimming on front or back, swimming on side, finning arm action, treading, combined arm and leg actions on front and back and swimming with life jackets. Music Movers 2

Tues | 4:30-5:30pm (4th-8th grade)

Instructor: Former NNM Dance Teacher Amanda MacDonald

Cost: $195

The magic of movement continues! Creativity is encouraged in this student-led choreography class. Members of this class will work collaboratively to choose music, choreograph and find opportunities to perform. Students build leadership skills, and friendship are formed and strengthened through dance.

3D Design and Printing

Create fun projects and 3D designs while learning exciting new STEM skills! Students in this class will learn about one of the most innovative technologies of our time - 3D Printing - and how to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to create, print and take home a series of awesome designs.

Dance Crew 1

Grades 3 & 4

In this active and engaging class, collaboration and performance are key. Students have opportunities to learn and create short dance routines intended for performance. Dance Crew is a great way to get active in an upbeat and social environment while also building confidence, stamina and coordination.

Taekwondo

Wed | 3:30-4:30pm or 4:30-5:30pm (Grades 1-4)

Instructor: Krasimir Rusev

Cost: $221

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that combines self-defense and combat techniques with fitness for the mind and body. Master Rusev introduces students to basics of traditional and modern Taekwondo, including blocks, strikes, stances, self-defense and more. Self-confidence and fun are key with every class an active learning adventure. Originally from Bulgaria, Master Rusev brings years of experience working with after school programs and competitive athletes. Master Rusev was appointed on the USA Taekwondo National Team Coaching staff as Assistant Coach for the Junior and Cadet National Teams for 2016-2018. Culture Club

In Culture Club, we will go on a "vacation" to a new country every week… all from within the classroom! We will learn about what contributes to the culture of a country by listening to their music, eating their food, watching their films and reading all about their unique histories and geographies. Come explore the world with us!

This is an opportunity for students to explore the area of technology that most interests them, including animation, coding, keyboarding, robotics gaming, design and more. So each class, students will have the opportunity to choose which area of technology they would like to explore.

Ever wonder how movies like “Frankenweenie,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Wallace & Gromit” are made? In this activity, students join Janeen to learn the art of stop-motion animation and will create, script, storyboard and animate characters to build a story, just like in the movies.

Ballet 9-12

Instructor: Professional Ballet Dancer Jane Sawyer

Dancers build upon their classical ballet foundations including the five positions, barre exercises, floor combinations and ballet classroom etiquette. Students are encouraged to have fun and express themselves through movement. Beginners and returning students are welcome.

Harry Potter Crafts

Keyboarding Skills & Computing Basics

In these fast-paced times, mastery of the keyboard is as essential as mastery of the pencil. Children gain exposure and training to technology skills that will benefit for a lifetime using both laptops and iPads to enhance interaction with technology devices in an engaging environment with plenty of fun.

Tap Dance 3

Bits & Bytes: Coding and Robotics

Join Janeen for a great experience exploring the art and science of writing computer code. Learn to design your own games and write your own apps as well as create programmable robots. The only limit is your imagination.

Dance Crew 2

Dance Crew II gives experienced dance students an opportunity to take their technique, creativity and performance skills to the next level. This fun and fast-paced learning environment challenges students to elevate their technical proficiency, while cultivating a supportive community where students are free to explore their artistic potential. Improvisation and choreography are central to the creative learning process.

Potters’ Studio

In the ceramics studio, imagination is the only limit. Sue guides students in creating earthenware cups, masks, sculptures and other imagined designs that will last a lifetime.

School Newspaper 9-14

Students in this class will serve as the designers and editors for NNM’s school newspaper. We will solicit articles, images and the interviews to create a newspaper for distribution to our school community each month.

Stroke Clinic

Instructor: NNM Aquatics Coordinator Kim Kuehl

Under Kim’s instruction, swimmers learn and master butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Students will learn drills to help improve all four strokes, as well as participating in swim workouts to build endurance and strength. As a prerequisite for this course, students must be able to swim one length of the pool (20 yards) freestyle with side breathing.
