6-9 Afterschool

With board games and plenty of Perler Beads, Session 1 Afterschool is the place to be! Afterschool provides a safe and happy place for students to engage in constructive activities and socialize with peers. This environment draws similarities to the Montessori classroom, and children have opportunities to pursue art projects, group games and stories according to their interests. A light, healthy snack is served and children play outside when weather and schedule allow.

Artists’ Workshop

Artists' Workshop is a popular staple of after school activities and a lively environment for all manner of artistic expressions. Students use paint, fabric, feathers, wood and more to explore their inspired endeavors. Sue provides guidance and skill development, and the young artists lead the way.

School Newspaper 6-9

Mon | 3:30-4:30pm

Instructor: NNM Art Director Annie Stone

Cost: $135

Students in this class will dive into all of the aspects that go into creating NNM’s school newspaper, as well as serve as the junior designers and editors. We will solicit articles, images and the interviews to create a newspaper for distribution to our school community each month.

Swim Team 6-9

Mon and Wed | 3:30-4:30pm (single registration)

Coach: NNM Aquatics Coordinator Kim Kuehl

Cost: $360 (includes both Mon and Wed)

Swim Team is a competitive team sport emphasizing stroke development, endurance training and sport etiquette. Students participate in practices and meets against other teams. For safety reasons, participants must be able to swim a length of the pool unassisted on both their front and back, tread water for 15 seconds and demonstrate postural control through rolling and floating. As per league rules, participants may not be a member of another swim team. Swim Team season continues through Session 2. Participation requires approval of Kim Kuehl, Aquatics Coordinator. Contact kkuehl@nnms.org with questions regarding your child’s swim level. Parental assistance during competition is greatly appreciated, though not required.

Crack the Code: Computer Programming

What are Scratch, Tynker and Hopscotch? Janeen will explore all three with your child as they take their first steps into programming. Creativity and problem solving come together for after school time that's worth staying late for!

Creative Improv

Tap into your spontaneity and let your imagination run wild! Beginning and returning students will develop a supportive, collaborative ensemble through drama and improv games. Together we will create characters, improvised scenes, and even entire stories through guided longform improv. In a comfortable, no-pressure environment, students will build confidence alongside physical and vocal skills. Be prepared to laugh... a lot!

Mandarin 6-9

We are so excited to bring Mandarin to 6-9! At ChinaFriends, our goal is to engage students in actively learning the language and culture of China using age-appropriate topics relevant to their daily life. Practical communication skills are our priority. Our curriculum uses a pragmatic, spiral-up learning approach to optimize retention and develop all communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing Chinese. Hip Hop Funk

Participants learn to express themselves through hip hop choreography and dance improvisation in a high-energy fun environment. The skills that students build in addition to new moves - confidence, creativity, and composure - will benefit them off the dance floor too.

Chess

Chess is a great way for students to learn patience, concentration and problem solving while having fun playing the world's greatest game. Students will learn rules, tactics and strategy as well as sportsmanship and the art of friendly competition. Theo brings many years of experience teaching chess at NNM and to Chicagoland students of all ages. Beginners and returning chess players are welcome.

Alternative Art Adventures

Trade in your paint brush for a potato masher, feathers or a tennis ball as we explore creativity in new and exciting ways. We will sculpt with recycled materials, paint with chemical reactions and much more. The possibilities are endless when you create outside of the box!

After-School Play: Devised

For this session’s 6-9 afterschool play, students will be guided through a fun devising process—making up stories together—resulting in an original short play! Through games involving character creation, improv, and collaboration, we will create a story in the early weeks of the session. In the later weeks, we will practice theatre skills and rehearse for an informal performance. The showcase will be February 19th.

By signing up, please consider this class a commitment to attend every week, aside from illness or planned absences cleared in advance. Students will learn firsthand about teammates counting on each other through this theatrical process!

WeDo Lego Robotics

In this popular course, students use Legos to build and program small robots. Janeen leads young programmers through building technological capacities in an environment of teamwork, collaboration and a whole lot of fun.

Instructional Swim 1 & 2

(Both sessions run concurrently, with instructors targeting the skill level of each participant)

Instructional Swim 1 is an introductory swim course emphasizing personal water safety and aquatic fundamentals. Skills covered include water entry/exit, bubbles, bobbing, opening eyes underwater, retrieving submerged objects, buoyancy on front (glide, recovery), buoyancy on back (float, glide, recovery), changing direction/position, treading, swimming on front/back (alternating and simultaneous arm/leg actions) and swimming with life jackets.

Instructional Swim 2 participants demonstrate mastery of aquatic fundamentals and continue to build new skills, with stronger emphasis on distance and time. Skills covered include entering by stepping or jumping from side, bobbing, submersion and retrieval of objects underwater, front float (tuck, jellyfish), back float, front/back glides, changing direction of travel while swimming on front or back, swimming on side, finning arm action, treading, combined arm and leg actions on front and back and swimming with life jackets. 3D Design and Printing

Create fun projects and 3D designs while learning exciting new STEM skills! Students in this class will learn about one of the most innovative technologies of our time - 3D Printing - and how to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to create, print and take home a series of awesome designs.

Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that combines self-defense and combat techniques with fitness for the mind and body. Master Rusev introduces students to basics of traditional and modern Taekwondo, including blocks, strikes, stances, self-defense and more. Self-confidence and fun are key with every class an active learning adventure. Originally from Bulgaria, Master Rusev brings years of experience working with after school programs and competitive athletes. Master Rusev was appointed on the USA Taekwondo National Team Coaching staff as Assistant Coach for the Junior and Cadet National Teams for 2016-2018. Dance Crew 1

Animation Station

Ever wonder how movies like “Frankenweenie,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Wallace & Gromit” are made? In this activity, students join Janeen to learn the art of stop-motion animation and will create, script, storyboard and animate characters to build a story, just like in the movies.

At Super Soccer Stars, it is our goal to teach soccer skills in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Stroke Clinic

Under Kim’s instruction, swimmers learn and master butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Students will learn drills to help improve all four strokes, as well as participating in swim workouts to build endurance and strength. As a prerequisite for this course, students must be able to swim one length of the pool (20 yards) freestyle with side breathing.
