Jobs week is an opportunity for 8th grade students to seek out their individual interests and have a valuable life experience which will help prepare them for adulthood. This past week, the eighth graders stepped outside of the classroom and into the real world where they were responsible for locating a prospective employer through their own research and networking skills. To prepare, students had to compile and present a resume and personally make arrangements for the work-week with their employers. Some jobs included working with lawyers at a legal aid clinic, bussing tables and serving at area restaurants, learning what real estate development is like and even building skateboards at a local skateboard shop. Beyond giving them confidence in their ability to adapt to new situations, manage time and navigate the city, the experience also encourages students to develop relationships with potential mentors.
