Timelines are a staple of the Montessori classroom. Some are teacher-made materials that serve as visual representations of a story being presented to the children and others spring from a child’s interest.Time can be a difficult concept to grasp. Understanding the passage of time begins at the 3-6 level with birthday timelines that highlight the dramatic changes the child has experienced since birth. By 6-9, the children create timelines of clothing, transportation, football and a multitude of other subjects. The photograph posted is part of a large presidential timeline that students have researched and illustrated. To an eight year old, either Grant or Carter would seem equally distant historical figures but creating timelines provides the mind a framework to organize vast quantities of new information. Our study of history begins at the creation of the universe, so there is a lot to cover and timelines are a valuable tool.
