Choose a Category ACADEMICS BEGINNING CHESS Beginning Chess is for young players or those who are just learning the game. No knowledge of pieces or moves is necessary. This class introduces children to a fun game, which exercises the brain and is packed with lessons about good sportsmanship and friendship. Prerequisite: None INTERMEDIATE CHESS This class is geared toward students with some chess playing experience or those who have completed one year in the beginner class. Children will refine the basics of the game and continue to focus on being good-thinkers and friendly opponents. Prerequisite: Beginning Chess or basic knowledge of the game
ADVANCED CHESS In this course, children will begin each session with a chess puzzle to review the previous week’s lesson. A group lesson covering a new chess idea will be introduced, followed by time to play chess and practice newly acquired skills. This course is designed for tournament players and those who know chess notation and basic tactics. Prerequisite: Intermediate Chess or recommendation by instructor 9-12 HOMEWORK GROUP Homework Group provides students with an opportunity to begin completing their homework assignments before coming home. Instruction will be provided in all of the major academic areas, including reading, math, spelling, written language, social studies and science. The class will also introduce students to good study habits and work strategies. Prerequisite: None
Calling all of NNM’s young scientists who have been looking for an opportunity to go *wild* in the lab! This is an opportunity for young elementary students to dive deeper into science with hands-on experiments and creative concoctions. Students’ interest in science will grow as they see scientific principles come alive right before their goggles! Prerequisite: None MIDDLE SCHOOL MATHWORKS This new club is designed to reach two kinds of math students. Children who find math particularly challenging and want to ensure a comfortable transition to junior-high level math will receive personalized help in mastering mathematical concepts as well as plenty of guided practice. Children who excel in math and are looking for additional challenge beyond classroom lessons will have the opportunity to work on advanced problems and delve into junior-high-level mathematical concepts. Junior High staff will work with children individually and in small groups. Prerequisite: None YEARBOOK The 2007 – 2008 Near North Montessori yearbook is seeking contributors of all ages to make this year’s edition the best ever. Students will design, create, and take part in each phase of the publication process: taking and collecting photographs, writing copy, making and executing editorial decisions, designing and laying out pages, and learning to use graphic design software. Yearbook staff members will take ownership over the yearbook, marketing it to other students and following it through from creation to distribution. Prerequisite: None
AQUATICS Swimming lessons are offered to children who are 4 years of age or who measure 36" from floor to chin. For safety reasons, children must be able to stand in the pool with their head above the water. Instructional swim classes typically consist of 45 minutes in the water and 15 minutes for changing into and out of swim gear. For all swimming classes, please send swim gear in a waterproof bag. This will helpyour child’s clothes stay dry. Swim suit, bathing cap (if hair is below the ears), towel, and bag for swim gear are required. Water shoes and flip-flops are optional. Please label all items with child’s name or initials. Be sure your child can identify his/her own clothes and bag. If you are unsure which swim class is appropriate for your child, please feel free to ask Carol Katsarea for a recommendation, 773.384.1434, ext. 677. BEGINNING INSTRUCTIONAL SWIM Beginning Instructional Swim Class is a wonderful opportunity to prepare your child for a lifetime of water enjoyment. This fun class covers water safety, water adjustment, and swimming readiness skills. The curriculum adheres to the Red Cross Preschool Aquatic Program. Prerequisite: None INTERMEDIATE INSTRUCTIONAL SWIM Intermediate Instructional Swim Class is designed for the experienced swimmer, who is comfortable in the water and ready for more advanced skills. The curriculum will focus on front crawl with rotary breathing as well as developing other strokes. Prerequisite: Swimmers should be able to swim the length of the pool without assistance. Instructors: Carol Katsarea and Rachel Price BEGINNING STROKE DEVELOPMENT This class will focus on refining all strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, andbutterfly. Ideal for intermediate swimmers who want to improve their skills through funexercises and practice or swimmers who are looking forward to joining swim team. Prerequisite: Swimmers must be familiar with the fundamentals of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke. Instructor: Carol Katsarea and Rachel Price INTERMEDIATE STROKE DEVELOPMENT Perfect for advanced swimmers and swim team members!! Swimmers will focus ondrills and exciting new techniques to improve stroke efficiency, speed, and style. Prerequisite: Swimmers must be proficient in front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke. Instructor: Carol Katsarea and Rachel Price NOVICE SWIM TEAM Any intermediate swimmer who can swim 40 meters (one lap) unassisted is welcome to join this team and compete in fun invitational swim meets. Novice Swim Team members should be willing to work hard to develop proficiency and build their endurance. (Novice Swim Team members are encouraged to enroll in a Stroke Development class as well.) Prerequisite: Proficiency in front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke. SWIM TEAM Any intermediate-advanced swimmer who can swim 80 meters (two laps) unassisted is welcome to join this team and compete in fun invitational swim meets. Swim Team members should be willing to work hard to develop proficiency, build their endurance, and perfect their stroke. (Swim Team members are encouraged to enroll in a Stroke Development class as well.) Prerequisite: Intermediate-Advanced proficiency in all four strokes. STARTING AT THE BEGINNING – PARENT/TOT SWIM (doors open at 11:15 a.m.) Tots learn early swimming skills in the secure arms of mom, dad, or caretaker. Circle time activities and songs make it fun as tots try bubble blowing, kicking and floating. These classes are open to non-NNM families. Adults are required to be in the water with their child at all times. Adults need not be swimmers. Prerequisite: None
LANGUAGE & CULTURE BEGINNING MANDARIN CHINESE I This is a fun class to introduce students to the sounds, tones and word pictures of Chinese. Students will learn to say and write the numbers 1 to 10. They will acquire early impressions of Chinese through culture stories, Chinese children’s games and songs. This course offers a 3-dimensional experience to the world of Chinese language and culture. Prerequisite: None BEGINNING MANDARIN CHINESE II After an introduction to the sounds and word forms of Chinese, students will learn how to greet family members and people in general. A highlight of this class is to acquire a set of action words and objects in the context of Chinese poems. Children will learn to recite these poems and apply their words in living expressions. Word games and songs will continue in the culture context. Prerequisite: Children should have some exposure to the Chinese language. INTERMEDIATE MANDARIN CHINESE This class follows a textbook and workbook set called Chinese Made Easy (children’s version). In this class, children learn to communicate in more complete expressions, such as giving a self-introduction to a group of people and discussing everyday topics like weather and food. Students will also learn to write in Chinese. Culture projects are included. Prerequisite: None BEGINNING ITALIAN In this course, beginning students will be immersed in Italian language and culture. Class time will be spent learning new words and concepts in Italian with Fabrizio, the Italian sock puppet, who does not understand any English. Language lessons will be supplemented by exploring Italian songs, games, art and puzzles. Prerequisite: None INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN This course is designed both for students who have had some contact with Italian and want to learn more and for those older students who are just beginning to learn. Through conversations with Fabrizio, the Italian sock puppet, and focused class exercises, students will expand their vocabularies and begin to use the language. Students will also engage in art, song, and storytelling in the target language. Language proficiency will increase through contextualized practice in everyday conversational scenarios. Prerequisite: None WHAT’S COOKIN’? Master basic kitchen skills in this “make it and take it” class. Students will slice and dice their way through simple dishes from around the world. Each child will have their own cookbook by the end of the class with interesting recipes to share with family and friends Prerequisite: None PERFORMING ARTS COLOR DANCE This class welcomes some of the youngest members of our NNM community to explore movement, sound and texture through dance music and visual arts. Children will learn about rhythm through various body movement activities. They will also venture through the wonderful world of color as they create their own artistic palettes in the art studio. Prerequisite: Children in the half-day program MAYPOLE DANCE In preparation for the Urban Garden Festival on May 10, children will learn the traditional Maypole folk dance. Dancers will be encouraged, but not required, to perform as part of the Urban Garden celebration. After the festival, this class will continue with other creative folk dance from around the world. Prerequisite: None INTRODUCTION TO BALLET In this class, young students will be introduced to the basics of ballet in a fun and engaging environment. Using lessons and curriculum developed by the Royal Academy of Dance, students will learn ballet by practicing free dance and creative movement. Prerequisite: None BEGINNING BALLET This class is designed for those new to ballet or those hoping to continue learning. Students will learn to establish grace, poise and a better understanding of basic ballet movements, as prescribed by the Royal Academy of Dance’s ballet curriculum. This course follows a natural progression from the introductory class available to 3-6 year-olds. Prerequisite: None INTERMEDIATE BALLET At this level dancers should already be familiar with ballet basics. Students will practice carefully crafted barre exercises that will enhance and strengthen their center work. A strong foundation is taught and emphasized throughout every class. Dancers will also work on lyrical expression and performance skills. Prerequisite: None INTRODUCTION TO TAP Young students will be introduced to the energetic world of tap. Each class will include rhythm games to stimulate ear awareness. Dancers will learn simple combinations and practice basic patterns. Partner and group dancing are done to encourage dancers to develop a uniform sound. However, individual creative expression is equally desired and emphasized. Prerequisite: None BEGINNING TAP In this course, dancers will learn the basics of tap along with its vocabulary. Challenging rhythm games are a fun, necessary part of every class. As the students acquire more skill, they will learn a short dance to allow for the development of performance abilities. Prerequisite: None INTERMEDIATE TAP This course is designed for those who have already been introduced to tap and are hoping to delve further into this exciting art form. Dancers continue learning complex rhythm patterns to better prepare their ears, mind and feet for the more intricate dance combinations that this class offers. Prerequisite: Must have completed Beginning Tap or have instructor’s approval INDIAN DANCE I This course is designed for those new to Indian dance and those curious about the culture surrounding it. Instruction will focus on "Bharata Natyam," an ancient dance form that uses stylized hand gestures, theatrical facial expressions, intricate footwork and complicated rhythms and counter-rhythms to visualize poetry, mythology and universal themes. No previous experience with dance is necessary. Prerequisite: None INDIAN DANCE II This course is meant for those whose appetite for Indian dance has already been whetted and who want to learn more. As in Indian Dance I, the class covers “Bharata Natyam,” an ancient and complex dance form. Students will delve further into the technique and performance of Indian dance. Prerequisite: Must have completed Indian Dance I or have instructor’s approval BREAK DANCE, ETC! In this course, students of diverse ability will be introduced to break dancing in a fun and safe environment. Class will cover warm-ups, break dance skills, basic gymnastic skills, jumps, and leaps. Students will work at their own pace on a wide variety of skills, including six step, backspin, footwork, freezes, top-rock, popping, cartwheels and more. All moves are practiced under professional supervision and with attention to safety. Students in this class will perform at the NNM Spring Film and Dance Festival. Prerequisite: None HIP-HOP and FUNK The styles of jazz, funk and hip-hop are fused together in this class. After a brief warm-up, students jump right into learning choreography. Each class covers basic steps and then gives students a chance to perfect them as they perform selected routines. Prerequisite: None EXPLORING MOVIE-MAKING I This class introduces students to fun theater games, short script reading, physical movement, and improvisation. Each session, students will have the opportunity to make a short movie. Movies will be edited by the instructor and presented at the NNM Spring Film and Dance Festival. Prerequisite: None EXPLORING MOVIE-MAKING II Theater games, short script reading, physical movement, and improvisation are at the core of this class. Students who have taken Movie-Making I will enjoy building on their skills in Movie-Making II. New students are welcome also! Each session, students will have the opportunity to make a short movie. Movies will be edited by the instructor and presented at the NNM Spring Film and Dance Festival. Prerequisite: None BUCKET DRUMMING Who said a bucket was for cleaning? In this class, students will turn buckets into unique drums to explore the world of rhythm and percussion. Students will learn to work together to create intricate beats and creative choreography. Willingness to make some noise is required! Prerequisite: None
PHYSICAL EDUCATION Registration for 6th – 8th grade spring team sports (girls soccer and coed softball) will take place separately. Nate Lyons, Athletic Director, will be sending all 6th-8th graders information about joining team sports. AIKIDO I The Japanese martial art of Aikido is a non-violent, non-competitive martial art. Students of Aikido learn to blend with their partner’s energy instead of fighting against it. Aikido students seek to gain control of one another during a technique, instead of recklessly hurting one another. Aikido also creates a strong mind-body connection, enhances core balance and coordination, and improves focus and concentration. Aikido I will focus on warm-ups, basic rolling, and exercises and games that improve coordination, focus and cooperation. Students will also learn basic techniques as well as the proper way to fall to avoid injury. Prerequisite: None AIKIDO II Aikido II is more traditional in nature. We will begin with the fundamentals of forward and backwards rolling, falling and basic exercises. Students will then progress to learn a variety of techniques. Underlying this training will be a strong emphasis on responsibility, awareness of one's surroundings and compassion toward fellow students. Prerequisite: None BEGINNING GYMNASTICS I This age-appropriate class teaches students the basics of gymnastics. Students will learn the basic movements used in floor exercises, tumbling and vaulting. Prerequisite: None BEGINNING GYMNASTICS II This class is for students who have a good understanding of basic gymnastics skills. Students will work on gymnastics apparatuses. Each child will be challenged in a manner appropriate for their skill level and with focus on skill development, strength training and flexibility training. Prerequisite: None GIRLS ON THE RUN INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED GYMNASTICS In this course, students will build on an existing knowledge of gymnastics by working within the Junior Olympic program curriculum. Students who consistently attend workouts will participate in the end of the year gymnastics performance and dance at the NNM Spring Film and Dance Festival. Students who have completed Beginning Gymnastics are encouraged to enroll. Mark recommends signing up for Tuesday and Thursday sessions for students who are serious about progressing. Prerequisite: Completion of Beginning Gymnastics or instructor’s approval CO-ED SPORTS 6-9 This class allows students time to play their favorite sports and the opportunity to learn fun new ones. Instruction focuses on basic technique, rules of play and the development of good teamwork skills and sportsmanship. In each session, students rotate through familiar sports like basketball, football and soccer, as well as less traditional offerings like land polo and floor hockey. Prerequisite: None CO-ED SPORTS 9-12 This class allows students time to play their favorite sports and the opportunity to learn fun new ones. Instruction focuses on basic technique, rules of play and the development of good teamwork skills and sportsmanship. In each session, students rotate through familiar sports like basketball, football and soccer, as well as less traditional offerings like land polo and floor hockey. Prerequisite: None CO-ED SOFTBALL Students will focus on the fundamentals of softball while learning about teamwork, good sportsmanship and friendly competition. This is a fun opportunity for children who are interested in eventually participating in the junior high athletic program to become familiar with this game at a younger age. Prerequisite: None BEGINNING YOGA In this course students will learn basic Yogic postures and practice simple relaxation techniques. The class will utilize fun games and creative movements to introduce new poses. Instruction will also focus on the principles of proper breathing, concentrated focusing, correctly "locking" the body and Vinyasa ("flowing" from one yoga posture to the next). Prerequisite: None INTERMEDIATE YOGA Intermediate students who are familiar with the basics of Yogic practice will strengthen their understanding through the study of "Power Yoga." This fast-paced class asks students to continually move from one yogic posture to the next, to generate internal heat that allows for better flexibility and movement. Students will work at their own level of comfort and will be encouraged to foster body awareness to prevent injury and to sharpen physical ability. Prerequisite: None STUDIO ARTS SMART ART Children will learn to turn trash into treasure as 3-6 Art takes on a new look, emphasizing getting creative with recycled and reused materials. Students will explore the fun and fascinating world of art while learning about the importance of turning used objects into something new. Creative thinking and imagination will lead this class through a variety of materials and artistic skill development. Prerequisite: None MARVELOUS MOSAICS Ancient civilizations to modern day societies have explored the art of mosaic. In this course, young artists will join in the tradition by creating beautiful, colorful images from decorative tiles. Children will explore a variety of designs, learn to assemble the pieces on a variety of surfaces, and admire the timeless finished products. Prerequisite: None THE ARTIST'S WORKSHOP This class will present students with a creative playground of art projects. Participants will have the freedom to experiment with different materials and tools, while developing drawing skills and individual expression through color, texture and brushwork. Prerequisite: None CERAMICS This course offers students an introduction to three-dimensional art, as well as a chance to let loose and get a little messy. Each week, participants will take on a new project, both to reinforce construction techniques and to introduce new tools and decorating options. Students are encouraged to use ceramics as a supplement to daytime classroom work: some may choose to model concepts like ecosystems, volcanoes or artifacts from foreign cultures. Prerequisite: None CERAMICS & ART AROUND THE WORLD Multicultural art and ceramics will be explored in this diverse class. While putting our own voice to each process, students will discover how different people throughout time have used clay, drawing, painting, and other craft forms to express their culture and heritage. Each week, participants will take on a new project, both to reinforce construction techniques and to introduce new tools and decorating options. Prerequisite: None SEWING, QUILTING & WEARABLE ART Back by demand, but with a new twist, this class will teach basic sewing and quilting skills, working with patterns, operating a sewing machine, and creating your own designs. Children will create a variety of pillows, blankets, totes, clothing, and much, much more. Be on the lookout for costuming created by NNM’s own designers at the NNM Film and Dance Festival next spring! Prerequisite: None CROCHET & KNIT CREATIONS Crochet and knitting have made a comeback! This course will journey through the world of both, from basic stitches to amazing wearable creations. Students will craft original scarves, mittens, hats, and more using decorative yarns and interesting patterns. This is the perfect activity to prepare for winter or create lovely homemade holiday gifts. Prerequisite: None DRAWING & PAINTING This class will explore basic drawing and painting techniques -- line quality, light & shadow, perspective, sketching skills, color study, color mixing, light & shade, and more. TECHNOLOGY KEYBOARDING SKILLS This class helps students become proficient using a computer keyboard and familiar with word processing formats and documents. All levels are welcome. Instruction will be tailored to each individual with plenty of focused practice to become a faster and more accurate typist. This is a perfect opportunity for the beginning typist as well as those who want to learn more about word processing programs. Prerequisite: None CREATIVE ENGINEERING and ROBOTICS with LEGO MINDSTORMS In this activity, students will explore mechanical and structural engineering concepts by building fully operational, mobile Lego constructions. Students will build problem-specific robots, write computer programs for these robots, and then test and improve their creations. Participants will also design and build simple machines, such as planes, levers, wheels and gears, and then be asked to consider the forces involved and the materials and shapes used. The course will emphasize universal design and creativity principles, including brainstorming, a willingness to think outside the box, and old-fashioned trial and error. Prerequisite: Students who have not taken this class before will have priority enrollment WEB DESIGN This class offers students an introduction in the basics of HTML, the programming language used for designing web pages. During the course of the term, participants will have the opportunity to create and complete a personalized web page, using a program such as Microsoft FrontPage.
