The Toddler Community is a bridge between home and school. The classroom is home-like in its appearance and feel, yet provides the children the beginnings of their Montessori education. The Toddler Community provides them the opportunity for social interactions and to develop their physical and psychological needs outside of the home.
At this level, children work on developing greater independence and confidence through working with materials that are especially sized for this age group. As Toddlers learn through their senses, exercises to heighten and refine the senses are offered to them to explore. Language skills are developed through direct instruction and vocabulary building as well as through the casual social conversations that go on daily between the children and the teachers. Fine and gross motor functions are developed and refined while working with the many activities in the class.
Spanish language is introduced to the children by the Spanish speaking classroom assistant in the form of songs and preliminary words and phrases.
Parents are encouraged to attend monthly education sessions throughout the school year to learn about child development, Montessori philosophy as well as practical parenting advice. These evenings are casual in format with opportunities for parent interaction and discussion. In addition, special Visiting Days for parents or special friends allow each child to share their classroom experience.
This program is available to children ages 24 – 35 months by September 1 of the year of entry, and is offered as a four day-a-week class or five day-a-week class. Class sizes are limited to 12 – 15 students with a student to teacher ratio of 1:6.
